Dear Hazel Glen College community,
As we come to the end of Term 2, it is a fitting time to reflect on what has been an incredibly positive and productive period for the College. Across both our Primary and Secondary Years, this term has been marked by strong student engagement, high-quality teaching and learning, and a continued focus on building a connected College community between students and staff.
A highlight of the term has been the strength of our teaching and learning programs. Across the College, staff have deepened their work with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0, with a particular emphasis on explicit instruction and consistent classroom practice. Teachers have collaborated to refine their craft, using data to inform their teaching and ensuring that learning is carefully scaffolded for all students. This work is clearly having an impact, with preliminary Attitudes to School Survey results showing significant growth in student engagement and connectedness, with positive trends scaling up.
Our students have participated in a wide range of enriching learning experiences beyond the classroom. In the Secondary Years, students have engaged in meaningful programs such as City Experience, Personal Best Projects and specialist pathways through the Whittlesea Tech School. Wellbeing initiatives, including Blue Edge, Headspace workshops and the Party Safe program, have provided targeted support and built students’ capacity to thrive both academically and personally. Our senior students have demonstrated commitment and resilience as they prepared for and completed their Semester 1 examinations.
In the Primary Years, there has been a strong focus on connection and student voice. House assemblies, led by our student leaders, have provided opportunities for students to come together, celebrate success, and reinforce our College values. The Student Representative Council continues to play an active role in shaping student experiences, including leading the theme selection for upcoming events such as the House Performing Arts Day. Partnerships across year levels, including the Year 5 and Year 9 buddy initiative, are strengthening transition pathways and reinforcing our P–12 community.
A particularly special feature of this term has been the breadth of co-curricular and community-focused experiences. Our upcoming College production in Term 3, Beauty and the Beast, has brought students together in a powerful display of creativity and collaboration, with the recent production camp providing an opportunity to further build both performance skills and relationships. Students also led initiatives that encouraged reflection, voice, and connection to country.
At a system level, the College has continued to progress important work in preparation for our upcoming school review, particularly in relation to Child Safe Standards compliance. We have also received positive developments regarding future capital works, and we look forward to further progressing these plans in partnership with the VSBA to upgrade our primary and secondary ovals.
Overall, Term 2 has been characterised by a strong sense of purpose, connection, belonging and continuous improvement. I would like to thank our students for their commitment to learning, our staff for their professionalism and dedication, and our families for their ongoing support.
We look forward to building on this momentum in Term 3.
Have a great break and we look forward to seeing everyone back recharged and ready to go for Semester 2.
